The Brand That Breathes

If you’ve ever found yourself asking, “should I get a website in a day or a full custom website design?”, you’re not alone, and you’re asking the right question. Most coaches who reach out about building a website aren’t really asking which option is better. They’re asking something closer to: which one makes sense for where I am right now? The pressure to launch fast or build perfectly is real, and both impulses come from an understandable place.
This is the exact conversation that happens here at Rebel Soul Media when a new client reaches out. There’s no universal right answer, and anyone who tells you otherwise is probably selling you a package, not a proper good fit. What actually matters is your business stage, your timeline, your content readiness, and what you need your website to do right now. This piece covers cost, timeline, design depth, and scalability, and gives you a clear framework for making the call.
Should I Get a Website in a Day or a Full Custom Website Design? Understanding the Difference
The framing of “one-day vs. custom” can make it sound like one is a shortcut and the other is the real thing. Neither is true. They’re built for different moments in a business, and using the wrong one at the wrong time is where things go sideways.
What a rapid website actually delivers
A one-day or one-week intensive builds like my VIP Day, or Website in a Day offering; typically uses a pre-designed and proven template or wireframe sections on a platform like Showit, Wix, or Squarespace. These outlines are then designed with your colours and updated to reflect the look and feel of your brand. The result is a clean, functional, professional-looking site, usually three to five pages, built in a condensed session with all content prepared in advance. It gets you visible, credible, and contactable fast. The design is solid but works within the structure the template provides. This is one of my fave ways of working as a retired live TV director – give me a tight deadline and I thrive! Read more about why this works for me (and you) here.
What a full custom design is really building
A custom website starts from your brand identity and builds outward. The design, layout, and user journey are created specifically for your business, your offers, and your audience. It’s a longer process, but what launches is a site that reflects your evolved identity and functions as a genuine client-conversion tool.
The Honest Cost Comparison in Canadian Dollars
Cost is usually the first thing coaches want to know, and the ranges are wider than most people expect on both ends. Understanding what drives those numbers helps you budget more accurately and avoid sticker shock mid-process.
One-day website investment ranges
A DIY build on a platform like Wix or Squarespace runs roughly CAD $20, $60 per month in platform fees plus hours of hand-on time required from you to do the damn thing. Often, the people who come to me for a VIP day are the same ones that bought a template (for $100 to $999) somewhere along the way and tried to DIY it first…only to find the headache of navigating the backend of the website builder too much to bear and the time it was taking to do it themselves was taking away from their client work/real life.
A professionally facilitated intensive, where a designer guides you through the entire process, typically lands between CAD $1500 and $5,000 depending on scope and what’s included. These packages usually cover a set number of pages with a working template, basic SEO setup, and mobile optimization. Currently my Website in a Day package is $2,500 CAD (but if you are lucky you can take advantage of my special 1 year anniversary deal where I am offering a limited number of spots for just $1500 through the end of 2026)
Full custom design: what drives the investment
A full custom website for a small wellness or coaching business in Canada generally falls between CAD $5,000 and $15,000, with more strategy-heavy or brand-plus-website packages sitting higher. The main cost drivers are page count, copywriting support, custom functionality like booking integrations or CRM connections, brand identity depth, and how much strategy work is built into the process. For most coaching businesses, budgeting CAD $5,000, $12,000 is the most realistic starting point for a genuinely custom build.
Timeline Reality: What “Fast” and “Thorough” Actually Look Like
Timeline expectations are where most coaches get surprised, in both directions. Both options come with conditions that most people don’t know going in.
Why a same-day build has real conditions attached
A one-day website is only realistic if content is fully prepared before the session starts. That means final copy (aka the words to go the pages), images, logo files (although I do include a wordmark logo in my offer), and a chosen template direction are all locked and ready. When those pieces aren’t in place, a “one-day” build often stretches into a one-week intensive. The speed is real, but it’s conditional on how prepared you are going in, and many coaches underestimate that part.
That’s exactly why I created my new 8 week online business foundations course, “The Brand That Breathes“. After working with countless small business owners on their brands and websites, I have found it’s the same foundational pieces that they are unsure of and once sorted out, make building not just their website, but every part of their biz easier! In this LIVE group program we go over the 5 M Rebel Marketing Framework and in real-time we figure out what you’re selling, who it’s for, what to say, where to show up and how all of it connects. Sound like something you need? You can read more about the program here.
The phases of a full custom project
A full custom design project typically moves through four distinct phases:
- Discovery and strategy, one to two weeks
- Design and visual direction, two to three weeks
- Development and build, three to five weeks
- Quality assurance and launch prep, one to two weeks
That puts the realistic total website turnaround time at eight to twelve weeks for most small coaching or wellness businesses. The benefit of that pace is that each phase builds on the last, so what launches has been thought through, tested, and built to actually work. This being said, for most coaches and service based businesses I do my best to keep semi-custom builds under 4 weeks. 🙂
Long-Term Scalability and What You Actually Own
Beyond the launch, the two approaches diverge in ways that matter more over time than they do on day one. Ownership and portability are worth thinking about before you commit to a platform.
Platform portability and ownership trade-offs
With a hosted builder like Wix or Squarespace, you own your content but not the underlying design system or hosting infrastructure. Moving platforms later often means rebuilding from scratch. More flexible platforms like Showit offer greater portability and control, especially because Showit integrates with WordPress for blogging and content marketing. It’s the difference between renting a furnished space and owning a building you can renovate: both work, but the long-term options are different.
SEO, page speed, and design flexibility over time
Template-based sites from Wix and Squarespace can carry extra code that can slow load times and create ceiling limits on technical SEO optimization (Nerd term alert! This just refers to some of the technical guidelines that google looks at like page speed, image load time, proper text property assignment etc). Custom builds are leaner because they include only what the site actually needs, which typically translates to faster performance and more control over the technical stuff . That said, a well-maintained template still performs well if the fundamentals are in place. The custom advantage is a higher ceiling, not a guaranteed outcome, and content quality matters more than build type in most cases.
Which Business Stage Points to Which Option: Beginner to Seasoned Business Owner
The clearest way to decide is to look at where your business actually is, not where you hope it will be in two years. Buying the next-level website before you’re at the next level is one of the most common and expensive mistakes coaches make.
Early-stage coaches and healers who need to launch now (I see you!)
If you’re launching your first offer, testing your niche, or simply need to go from invisible to visible without a large upfront investment, a rapid website build makes practical sense. You need a place for people to find you, understand what you do, and reach out. A clean, well-structured one-day or one-week site does that job well, and you can evolve it as your business grows and your direction becomes clearer. This is my magic spot and where most of my clients live.
Established wellness entrepreneurs ready for the next level
If you’ve been in business for a year or more, your offers are clear, your clients are consistent, and your current website no longer reflects who you’ve become, that’s a strong signal that a full custom build is the right move. The same applies if you’re stepping into a more visible role, whether that’s speaking, group programs, or podcasting, and you need your online presence to carry that weight with new audiences. A patchwork of updates on an old template rarely closes an identity gap.
How Rebel Soul Media Helps You Make the Call
This decision doesn’t have to be made in isolation, and it’s not one with a universal right answer. With Rebel Soul Media, our conversation starts with where you are in your business, not with pushing a package that fits our sales pitch or schedule. I 100% want to help you find the best fit for you – and I won’t hold back my thoughts or sugar coat things; that is my promise. 🙂
Fast-track options for coaches who need momentum
Rebel Soul Media’s Website-in-a-Day and Website-in-a-Week intensive packages are built specifically for coaches and wellness entrepreneurs who are ready to quick-launch, have their content prepared, and need a professional online presence without a months-long wait. These aren’t generic template drops. They’re guided builds on platforms like Showit and Wix, with brand voice and strategy woven into the session so the site sounds like you. Yes, there is some prep work involved and you need to have your copy and photos ready to go before build day (I can help you with the copy and you can get a head start with my free guide here), but this option is perfect for most coaches and creatives just starting out.
Full brand and design for coaches stepping into growth
For coaches who are redefining what they do, shifting their offers, or stepping into greater visibility, Rebel Soul Media offers full business foundation programs and custom website packages that work from the inside out. The process covers identity alignment, visual brand direction, and a site built to convert and scale. What launches actually reflects who you are now, not who you were when you first started booking clients from Instagram DMs.
The Best Website Is the One That Fits Right Now
The best website isn’t the most expensive one or the fastest one. It’s the one that matches where your business is right now and gives you a solid foundation to build from, without keeping you stuck waiting for perfect. Waiting for perfect has kept more coaches invisible than any bad template ever has.
If you’re still asking yourself, “should I get a website in a day or a full custom website design?”, let your business stage answer the question. If you’re early-stage and need to start, a rapid build gets you visible and moving. If you’ve outgrown what you have, a full custom project gives your brand the room it actually needs. Neither is a shortcut or a compromise when used at the right moment.
Rebel Soul Media offers both paths. If you want to get clear on what your site actually needs and why each section matters, the free step-by-step website guide is a practical first step, grab it here. Or reach out directly to talk through where you are and which option aligns with where you’re headed. Either way, the next step is a conversation, not a commitment.
